U.S. population in cities growing faster than in suburbs ? Let's ...

Manhattan Skyline

Those who are following the resurgence of urban centers, this won?t be a surprise ? the population in cities growing faster than in suburbs:

For all 51 metro areas with a million or more people, cities as a whole grew by 1.1% from 2010 to 2011, while suburbs increased 0.9%. That?s a big change from the last decade, in which suburbs expanded at triple the rate of cities.

?This can really be seen as a milestone,? said William Frey, a Brookings Institution demographer who analyzed the census data to be released Thursday. ?What?s significant about it is that it?s pervasive across the country.?

via U.S. population in cities growing faster than in suburbs ? latimes.com.

The Sacramento Area Council of Governments has an interesting white paper entitled Changing National Demographics and Demand for Housing Types which reinforces this larger trend:

Myers and SungHo Ryu argue [in Aging Baby Boomers and the Generational Housing Bubble: Foresight and Mitigation of an Epic Transition - ed.] that the future population and age structure will lead to differences between age and home buying and selling. The aging, retirement and lifestyle patterns of the 76 million baby boomers will likely shape U.S. housing markets and trends for decades ahead. They conclude that there will be an oversupply of homes offered for sale by aging baby boomers ? many of which may not be of the housing type that young buyers want. The researchers raise the idea that where decline once occurred as housing moved from the central city to the suburbs, it may now be reversed as the suburbs will see surpluses of large-lot single-family housing.

The suburbs have long enjoyed subsidies many magnitudes greater than central cities, which is a travesty when you rank the productivity and economic output of denser central cities to suburbs. It isn?t even close according to the New York Fed in Management of Large City Regions: Designing Efficient Metropolitan Fiscal Policies:

Among the 363 MSAs [ed. what's an MSA?] defined by OMB, just fifty had populations over one million. Yet the output of these fifty cities accounted for nearly two-thirds (65%) of national GDP of $11.5 trillion (in $2001).

I can?t talk about others whom champion cities, but I think there is a place for hyper dense cities such as Manhattan, merely dense cities such as Brooklyn or even Boston and the suburbs. But the fact that the suburbs are given subsidies over and above cities is just wrong from a moral point of view (unless you are buying land in West Virginia as future oceanfront property) but also from an economic point of view. Investing in multimodal transportation ? high speed rail and local mass transit ? not only makes sense from an economic viewpoint, but increases individual liberty by allowing people to chose to walk, take the train or buy and drive their personal car.

Controversy and religion in the news: Germany and the male ...

Hello everyone :)

We?re getting close to our departure date, so stay tuned for more frequent posts during the month of July including?a packing list!

If you have a little time now that finals are over, this is an interesting article to check out. ?Like the French headscarf ruling that had the world watching closely a few years ago, this German decision on male circumcision has many people very upset (and others very happy? as controversies go). ?A fascinating look into religion in the public sphere in one of the countries we?ll be visiting?

By?NICHOLAS KULISH
Published: June 26, 2012
BERLIN ? A German court in Cologne ruled on Tuesday that circumcising young boys represents grievous bodily harm, a decision that could have significant repercussions for religious groups.Follow@nytimesworld?for international breaking news and headlines.

The president of the?Central Council of Jews in Germany?condemned the decision as ?an unprecedented and dramatic intrusion on the self-determination of religious communities? and called on the German Parliament to pass legislation protecting?circumcision?as a religious practice.

The case centered on a 4-year-old boy whose Muslim parents had him circumcised by a doctor, which led to medical complications. Although both Muslims and Jews circumcise infant boys as a religious practice and many other people do so for health reasons, the court found that the child?s ?fundamental right to bodily integrity? was more important than the parents? rights.

According to the court, the religious freedom ?would not be unduly impaired? because the child could later decide whether to have the circumcision.

Millions of Muslims call Germany home, as do more than 100,000 Jews, as part of a community that has enjoyed a significant resurgence here. Since?World War II, many Germans have been careful to consider Jewish sensitivities as a result of the horrible crimes committed against Jews during the Holocaust in the name of the German Reich.

Jewish leaders reacted furiously to Tuesday?s decision. The central council?s president, Dieter Graumann, called it ?outrageous and insensitive,? saying in a statement that circumcision had been practiced worldwide for thousands of years. ?In every country in the world this religious right is respected,? Mr. Graumann said.

Germany has no law against male circumcision, as there is against female?genital cutting. Experts said that the decision would not be enforceable in other jurisdictions. But the legal uncertainty and threat of possible prosecution could lead doctors to decline to perform the procedure.

The central council said the national Parliament, the Bundestag, should ?create legal certainty and thereby protect religious freedom from attacks.?

The decision by the court ?places an intolerable burden on the free exercise of religion by Jews and also by Muslims who practice male circumcision as part of their religious faith,? Abraham H. Foxman, the Anti-Defamation League?s national director in New York, said in a?statement.

While the ruling did not appear to have specific anti-Semitic intent, Mr. Foxman said, ?its effect is to say, ?Jews are not welcome.???

Holm Putzke, a criminal law expert at the University of Passau, told the German news agency DPA that the ruling was not binding for other courts, but could send a welcome signal.

?After the knee-jerk outrage has faded away, hopefully a discussion will begin about how much religiously motivated violence against children a society is ready to tolerate,? he said.

Alaska wreckage from deadly 1952 military plane crash

By By Chris Klint, Channel 2/KTUU.com, and msnbc.com staff

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? The wreckage of a military plane found near Knik Glacier?earlier this month has been identified as a Korean War-era Air Force cargo plane that crashed in the 1950s, killing all 52 people on board, NBC?station KTUU?of Anchorage reported Wednesday.

The identification brings closure to victims' families after nearly 60 years, KTUU said.

Joint POW-MIA Accounting Command spokesperson Capt. Jamie Dobson said?the wreckage,?discovered June 10 on Colony Glacier, about 45 miles east of Anchorage,?by a UH-60 Blackhawk crew with the Alaska Army National Guard-- is that of a Douglas C-124A Globemaster II that crashed?on Nov. 22, 1952.

See the original story at NBC station KTUU

While evidence collected by the eight-man teamis en route to JPAC?s Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii for further analysis, Dobson told KTUU?the plane was identifiable by materials found at the scene.

"Some of the evidence has already been positively correlated with this crash," Dobson told KTUU.

Harsh weather prevented a recovery at the time and later searchers could not locate it.

The Globemaster II entered Air Force service in 1950 as the world?s largest transport plane. Its forward loading ramp and aft cargo elevator, as well as its ability to carry 68,500 pounds of cargo or 200 passengers on two decks of seating, made it the Air Force's primary heavy-lift transport into the early 1960s, KTUU reported.

The four-propeller transport was eventually replaced by the C-141 Starlifter jet, but its name lives on in Alaska skies with the C-17 Globemaster III, operated by the 517th Airlift Squadron at Anchorage?s Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Crash researcher Tonja Anderson, whose grandfather Airman Isaac Anderson died in the crash, told KTUU the cargo plane was on a flight from McChord Air Force Base in Washington to Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage when it crashed near the 8,000-foot level of Mount Gannett.

Hacked eHarmony passwords analyzed for holes

9 hrs.

It makes sense that users of an online matchmaking?service would use the word "love" in a password, ?but it's not really the best choice.?A?recent analysis of 1.5 million hacked eHarmony passwords found that "love" was the most "common word in passwords" used by the service's?subscribers, with "dog" not far behind.

"While the psychological meanings of these passwords are for the medical profession to decide, the security ramifications are clear," wrote Mike Kelly, security analyst for Trustwave, a security company that analyzed the passwords, hacked in a recent breach that also happened to users of LinkedIn and Last.fm Internet radio earlier this month.

"Perhaps most telling," Kelly wrote, was that the analysis "also revealed more than 99 percent of the passwords used had no special characters," such as "!" or "$," something that security experts?often?recommend including in?passwords.

The good news? "Password," often the most common word in passwords, "was only found in 240 passwords," Kelly wrote. " 'Love' was found most often of all the words we checked, which is not surprising due to the fact that these are passwords from eHarmony users.? Also interesting to us, was that we found 'dog' more than twice as often as we found 'God.' ?Would that hold true if this were a Christianmingle.com dump?"

Trustwave, in its blog posting, also took eHarmony to task for not using what it deemed to be?a secure?enough format for users'?password storage.

A spokesperson for the matchmaking site told msnbc.com that eHarmony could not comment on Trustwave's findings.

"The security of our users is of the utmost importance to us," she said. But, "due to our ongoing investigation and cooperation with law enforcement authorities, we cannot comment on these specific points."

Trustwave said among the most "interesting" base words in eHarmony passwords it found were, in this order: Love, dog, 1234, luv, sex, God, angel, lover, 123456, Jesus, date, harmony, eHarmony, forever and ? yep, "password."

"We found it interesting that we saw the Top 100 dogs names more often than the top 100 baby girl names" in passwords,? Kelly wrote. "Also, that National Football League teams were seen less than National Hockey League teams. Does this say anything about eHarmony demographics?"

Here's a percentage breakdown by Trustwave of hacked eHarmony passwords that include the following info:

Top 100 baby boy names of 2011???47,478 (4 percent)
Top 100 baby girl names of 2011 ?? 25,670 (2 percent)
Top 100 dog names of 2011 ?? 41,700 (3.5 percent)
Months of the Year (abbreviated) ?? 26,358 (2 percent)
Days of the week (abbreviated) ???12,492 (1 percent)
Years 2000 through 2012 ?? 13,143 (1 percent)
Top 25 worst passwords of 2011 ?? 4,894 (.5 percent)
National Football League team names ?? 1,367 (0 percent)
Major League Baseball team names??? 8,725 (1 percent)
National Hockey League team names ?? 2,491 (.5 percent)
100 most populated U.S. cities ?? 2,392 (0 percent)
100 most populated world cities ?? 2,197 (0 percent)
Curse words ?? 10,144 (1 percent)

Overall, while Trustwave said it saw "many patterns we expected, we also saw many more that surprised us." Wrote Kelly:

The eHarmony dump is just further proof that organizations need to not only store passwords in stronger, salted formats than was previously acceptable, but also need to enforce stronger case-sensitive password policies.? Users, as a whole, still do not understand the need for strong passwords, and will continue to set passwords that meet only the minimum requirements.

'Wild Things' author spoke of desire to kill Bush

By Kurt Schlosser

In one of his final interviews, celebrated children's book author Maurice Sendak said he fantasized about killing former President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

The "Where the Wild Things Are" author and illustrator, who died on May 8 at age 83, spoke with Gary Groth for an interview in The Comics Journal. A preview of the interview was published last month.

The famously cranky Sendak?spoke at length about his comics career,?his life and times, and blowing up the president.

"Bush was president, I thought, 'Be brave. Tie a bomb to your shirt. Insist on going to the White House,'" Sendak told Groth. "And I wanna have a big hug with the vice president, definitely. And his wife, and the president, and his wife, and anybody else that can fit into the love hug.

"And then we?ll blow ourselves up, and I?d be a hero," Sendak said. "To hell with the kiddie books. He killed Bush. He killed the vice president. Oh my God. ... It would have been a very brave and wonderful thing. But I didn?t do it; I didn?t do it."

Eric Reynolds, associate publisher at Fantagraphics Books, where Groth is founder and president, said Tuesday that they've seen quite a bit of outrage on Twitter and a few?conservative blogs. "I saw a tweet just a few minutes ago that said, 'I wish I'd read and collected Sendak's books as a kid so I could burn them now.'"

Sendak certainly never shied from expressing his outrage at numerous things. In an interview with The Guardian last fall, he railed against everything from e-books to the American political right to Gwyneth Paltrow.

"Anyone who has watched Sendak's infamous interview on the 'Colbert Report' (or read his books, for that matter), should recognize that not only was he cranky, he had a razor-sharp wit and a very dark sense of humor," Reynolds said. "He was 83 years old when he gave this interview [to Groth]. He was at the point in his life where he clearly didn't give a damn about propriety; he could speak his mind and clearly enjoyed provocation. I see these comments as part and parcel of his personality, not as a legitimate, actionable, treasonous threat."

Rielle Hunter: 'Edwards and I are no longer a couple'

Rielle Hunter, left, is shown Aug. 6, 2009, and former U.S. senator and presidential candidate John Edwards is seen May 10, 2012.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Rielle Hunter says she and former presidential candidate John Edwards have ended their relationship in a painful but mutual breakup.

Edwards will still be involved with their daughter, Quinn, 4 , Hunter said.

"We are a family, but as of the end of last week, John Edwards and I are no longer a couple," Hunter said on ABC?s ?Good Morning America" on Tuesday. "We decided together to end it."

Hunter said she and Edwards were still a couple until late last week, as details from Hunter's memoir became public.

Asked why the relationship ended, Hunter said, "I think that's private." She said "media scrutiny" is ?hard, and it wears you down after a while."

Edwards was not immediately available for comment.

Her book, "What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me," was released Tuesday through a Dallas-based boutique publisher, BenBella Books.

In the book, The Associated Press reported, Hunter describes intimate details about her affair with Edwards, whose campaign hired her as a videographer, and sheds light on his thoughts as federal prosecutors mounted a case against him on illegal campaign contribution charges.

Prosecutors had accused the Democratic politician of masterminding a scheme to use about $1 million in secret payments from two wealthy political donors to hide his pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.

Watch US News videos on msnbc.com

According to Hunter, Edwards told her he would probably wind up in a low-security prison in Virginia if he was convicted, and Hunter said she planned to move nearby with their daughter if that happened.

A federal jury last month acquitted Edwards on one count of accepting illegal campaign contributions but deadlocked on five related charges. A judge declared a mistrial, and federal prosecutors on June 13 said they opted not to retry Edwards.

Hunter's memoir also includes intimate details about her affair with Edwards as his wife, Elizabeth, was dying of cancer. On Tuesday, Hunter said she felt it was necessary to tell the truth about her relationship, even if doing so was painful for her, Edwards or his other children.

Saying that she still loves Edwards, and that she believes he still loves her, Hunter said Tuesday that she was unsure of the future.

"We'll see what happens," she said. "I have no plans."

Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and director Nora Ephron died Tuesday (June 26) from pneumonia. She was 71. News of Ephron's passing first hit the Internet late Tuesday when journalist Liz Smith, a friend of Ephron's, published a column remembering the late director.

"She never gave the answer I expected to anything. She was grave in her humor, which made it deadly, unexpected, truly funny and dauntingly intelligent," wrote Smith. "She seemed never to want or expect anything, while always demanding the best from the rest of us. She was — always — right and somehow left the smartest, most ambitious and silliest of us in the dust at her feet."

Ephron lived a storied life both on set and behind the scenes. Born in New York City in 1941 and raised in Beverly Hills, California, Ephron worked as a journalist for numerous years before trying her hand writing and directing for film. Her writing appeared in such outlets as Esquire and New York, and she was even married to Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame from 1976 until 1980. She later wed screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi in 1987; they remained married until the time of her death.

In 1983, Ephron's first major Hollywood movie, "Silkwood," arrived in theaters. Starring marquee names including Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell and Cher, Ephron's "Silkwood" was based on the true story of Karen Silkwood, who was killed in a suspicious accident during her investigation into the unethical practices of the nuclear power plant that employed her. The film was nominated for five Oscars, including one for Ephron's screenplay.

Over the course of her career, Ephron cemented her place in Hollywood as one of the industry's finest romantic comedy writers. She wrote the iconic "When Harry Met Sally ... " and directed numerous films, including the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan-starring "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail." Her final film as writer and director was "Julie & Julia."

"I won't say, 'Rest in peace, Nora,' " Smith wrote in her eulogy of Ephron. "I will just ask, 'What the hell will we do without you?' "

Share your condolences for Ephron's family and friends in the comments.

Wyoming has most expensive auto repair costs

CarMD Reveals State-by-State Ranking of Car Repair Costs; Motorists in Wyoming Paid Most, Indiana Drivers Paid Least for Repairs

States experienced a drop in repair costs in 2011; Texas sets benchmark with national average

IRVINE, Calif. ? Drivers in Wyoming paid the most in the nation for car repairs at an average cost of $389.18, according to CarMD.com Corporation, which analyzed more than 160,000 repairs made on vehicles with "check engine" light problems in 2011. In Wyoming, home to two of the top 10 most visited national parks; motorists paid 17% more than the U.S. average for overall repairs, including 19% more for labor and 15% more for parts. Drivers in Indiana paid the least at $283.95 per transaction. Rounding out the top five most expensive states for car repair are no. 2 Utah, no. 3 California, no. 4 Montana and no. 5 Arizona. These states are home to half of the nation's national parks and many popular, yet remote and higher-elevation driving destinations. CarMD, a leading provider of automotive information and products, has developed the largest database of "check engine" repairs, and releases this list annually to empower drivers to make educated decisions that maximize vehicle life and minimize repair costs. The full Index is available at http://corp.carmd.com.

"Each year, CarMD taps into our Vehicle Health Index repair database to monitor trends, including state-by-state and nationwide auto repair costs," says Art Jacobsen, vice president, CarMD. "We are encouraged to see overall repair costs trending down this year but recognize that drivers are still putting off small repairs such as spark plugs and oxygen sensors that can quickly turn into more serious problems. With the higher cost for repairs in popular western vacation destinations, our data illustrates the need for summer travelers to make preventative maintenance and vehicle safety checks paramount in their road-trip preparation."

Several interesting findings emerge when comparing state-by-state repair rankings. According to the CarMD? Vehicle Health Index?, the average cost of U.S. "check engine"-related auto repairs in 2011 was $333.93, including $215.32 in parts and $118.61 in labor. This figure is down 6% from 2010 repair costs, due in large part to a double-digit drop in labor costs. This isn't all good news for consumers. Industry contraction has a lot to do with the drop in labor rates, which are being partially offset by increased parts costs, and more severe repairs increasing in frequency and reaching the 10 most common problems list. Most states/districts experienced a drop in repair costs, with the exceptions being District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Utah.

CarMD also found that Texas paid closest to the national average for car repair costs at $333.75, just pennies less than the U.S. average. CarMD attributes Wyoming's no. 1 ranking to harsh weather and high altitude that may wreak havoc on vehicles. Another factor in Wyoming's ranking is its more remote locations with widespread and reduced access to parts and people to service them, which results in motorists' tendency to put off smaller repairs. This is clearly illustrated by the fact that catalytic converter repairs were the second most common reason the "check engine" light came on in Wyoming. It shouldn't even be in the top 10, let alone ranked second. This is a very expensive repair, and often the result of putting off smaller repairs.

"Just as you map your trip and make your hotel or campsite reservations, it's important to check your vehicle's health and pay attention to little nagging problems like diminishing fuel economy, squeaky brakes and especially the pesky 'check engine' light," says Jacobsen. "You will pay less and have peace of mind by getting your car looked at by your preferred mechanic on your own time and budget, versus being forced to make repairs when you're away from home and loaded down with luggage. Nothing will ruin a family vacation quicker than major car trouble when you are away from home."

Top 5 states with the highest car repair costs, according to CarMD:

State Average Parts Cost Average Labor Cost Average Total Car Repair Cost in 2011 (Parts & Labor)
Wyoming $247.70 $141.48 $389.18
Utah $240.33 $138.21 $378.54
California $237.32 $130.54 $367.86
Montana $228.29 $136.00 $364.29
Arizona $233.47 $129.18 $362.65

Top 5 states with the lowest car repair costs, according to CarMD:

State Average Parts Cost Average Labor Cost Average Total Car Repair Cost in 2011 (Parts & Labor)
Indiana $176.10 $107.85 $283.95
Maine $175.91 $113.65 $289.56
Wisconsin $180.95 $108.95 $289.90
Iowa $177.32 $112.59 $289.91
New Hampshire $191.47 $101.19 $292.66

Other key findings:

  • The top five states with the highest car repair costs are from the West, including Wyoming, Utah, California, Montana and Arizona.
  • This can partially be attributed to higher amounts of airborne dust. By putting off replacing air filters in western states, vehicle owners put their vehicles' mass air flow sensors at risk. On average, this is a $400 repair.
  • Three of five states with the lowest car repair costs are from the Midwest, including: Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa. Rounding out the most affordable states for auto repair are Maine and New Hampshire from the Northeastern U.S.
  • Drivers in Vermont paid the least for labor at $98.90, with those in Colorado paying the most at $143.17 for labor.
  • Drivers in Maine paid the least for parts at an average of $175.91, with those in Wyoming paying the most ($247.70).
  • The no. 1 most common repair across the country in was "Replace Oxygen (O2) Sensor." A faulty O2 sensor is often ignored because it may seem like the vehicle is driving fine, but can actually lead to as much as a 40% reduction in fuel economy.
  • On average, motorists paid the least in Nebraska ($209.81) and the most in Illinois ($313.25) to have an O2 sensor replaced. The average cost to replace an O2 sensor, which measures the amount of unburned oxygen in the exhaust and tells a car's computer when there is too much or not enough fuel as compared with oxygen for ideal operation is $244.23 in the U.S.
  • In Wyoming, O2 sensors comprised 10.10% of repairs last year, at an average cost of $233.92. If ignored, a faulty O2 sensor can not only cause reduced fuel economy, but can also lead to more serious parts failures such as the catalytic converter. A faulty catalytic converter may then lead to complete engine seizure and roadside breakdown. "Replace Catalytic Converter(s)" accounted for 5.72% of repairs in Wyoming, at an average cost of $1,030.63. Original equipment parts are typically needed when replacing a catalytic converter. Catalytic converters contain three of the most precious metals ? platinum, palladium and rhodium. They are usually not stocked by smaller or more rural repair shops due to their high cost.

CarMD's state-by-state ranking of repair costs was derived from analysis of 163,582 repairs made from Jan. 1, 2011 through Dec. 31, 2011 by CarMD's network of Automotive Service Excellence-certified technicians. The repairs are related to a vehicle's "check engine" system, which is designed to alert drivers to large and small problems that affect emissions output and drivability. This technology is standard on all vehicles manufactured since 1996. It covers roughly 90% of cars, light trucks, minivans, SUVs and hybrids ? foreign and domestic ? on the road today. It monitors about 80% of systems on these vehicles. The CarMD database and average repair costs findings do not include problems that are outside the scope of a vehicle's on-board diagnostic computer monitoring such as tires, brakes and mechanical parts like belts and hoses. The CarMD? Vehicle Health System? is an award-winning product that provides consumers with an easy way to save money by quickly and accurately diagnosing car problems from home. It also provides peace of mind before long road trips, emissions inspections, when inspecting a used car, or before and after visiting the auto repair shop.

Kofi Annan Can Save Syria

To date, there has been nothing similar to the Contact Group plan that was hammered out in the summer of 1994 by representatives from Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States, and implemented the following year in Dayton, Ohio, after months of on-the-scene diplomacy. In Syria, the only diplomatic process is in the hands of the courageous, if beleaguered, former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who has understood?better than many analysts of this latest international outrage?that any lasting political settlement must not be a triumph of one side or the other.

SPCC selected for humanities project | Union County Weekly

MONROE ? South Piedmont Community College has been selected to participate in the Community College Humanities Association?s ?Advancing Humanities: A National Endowment for the Humanities Bridging Cultures Project.?

SPCC was one of 18 community colleges, and the only one from North Carolina, selected from among 70 applications from 30 states.

The purpose of the project is to advance cultural and civic understanding in introductory humanities courses. The 18 colleges will receive day-to-day guidance from humanities scholars and experienced community college humanities mentors as they strengthen their curriculums and engage in faculty development and scholarship in one of five disciplines: literature, history, philosophy, religion or civic engagement.

SPCC will participate in literature. Its three-person team will consist of Dean of Arts and Sciences Valerie Jones and English instructors Sherri Breitigan and Tammy Frailly.

The project will pay travel expenses for two of the team members to attend the National Bridging Cultures Conference on Sept. 27 to 29 in Washington, D.C., and for one to attend the same conference in December 2013 at a location yet to be determined. The project will provide stipends for Breitigan and Frailly to pursue project tasks and independent scholarship to strengthen preparation and enrich their teaching.

At the conference in September, SPCC?s team will work with mentors and scholars there to begin developing a plan to advance cultural understanding toward building a community and begin developing an action plan for implementation during the project?s 18-month period.

The impetus for SPCC to apply for the program was a course that will be new at SPCC next spring. English 262, World Literature II, will introduce selected works from the Pacific, Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas from the 18th century to the present. Many of these are works SPCC instructors have not taught before and the college wanted to ensure faculty could help its students ? many of whom have had little exposure to diverse religions, socioeconomic classes and ethnicities ? gain an appreciation for the importance of intercultural understanding. This also will benefit many of these students who later transfer to four-year universities and move farther out of their comfort zones.

'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' is dull

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

The concept is brilliant: Axe-swinging Abraham Lincoln, that solemn face on our penny, out there kicking vampire butt and taking names. Yet "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," based on Seth Grahame-Smith's book, doesn't live up to its wild and weird theme.

The film begins with a young Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) trying to protect a slave friend, Will, from a whipping. Turns out that the creep with the whip has a secret life, and soon Lincoln's mother dies -- not of the "milk fever" we learn about in history books, but of a vampire bite. When Abe gets older, he teams up with a man who teaches him how to hunt down vampires, and all through a job as a store clerk, legal studies and his courtship of Mary Todd, he spends his nights out defanging the creatures.

You know part of the story: Lincoln ascends to the presidency and the nation is torn apart in the Civil War. But in the movie's universe, the vampires need slavery to continue so they can have a steady food source, and thus throw in on the Confederacy's side. Lincoln and his posse -- including now-grown Will (Anthony Mackie) -- can't let that happen, for the nation's sake and that of the human race.

There are fun elements in the film, including one great line about the Underground Railroad and numerous appearances by familiar names out of our history books.

But nothing really comes together. Benjamin Walker plays young Lincoln with a nice amount of gravitas, but he never makes you really root for him, staying as remote as a five-dollar bill . The vampires are pretty much interchangeable, with veiny gray skin and "Matrix"-meets-"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" moves. The movie didn't need to be in 3-D, but the technology is inoffensive here, with a few bullets zinging their way at the audience and some beautiful early Washington scenery.

It's a shame this movie wasn't livelier. It truly has the greatest film title outside of "Snakes on a Plane" -- which, come to think of it, couldn't live up to its promise, either.
