Thirty-two years ago this month an explosive eruption reshaped Mount Saint Helens in a matter of seconds. An earthquake under the volcano in Washington State on May 18, 1980, triggered the largest landslide in recorded history as billions of cubic meters of mountainside tumbled away, initiating a massive release of gas, lava and ash. The cataclysm killed 57 people and sent a plume some 20 kilometers into the sky.

The 1980 eruption was not totally unexpected. For the two months prior, earthquakes and steam explosions had rattled the mountain, and the north slope of the volcano had noticeably swelled outward. But interpreting just what was happening beneath the mountain to cause those shudders and belches was not possible.

Now a team in England and Germany has linked the seismic record from that era to magmatic processes beneath Mount Saint Helens by closely examining crystallized minerals formed in the volcano's innards just before eruption.

In a study appearing in the May 25 issue of Science, the researchers report that crystals of the silicate mineral orthopyroxene from 1980 and from subsequent eruptions trace various injections of magma, as well as other chemical changes, within the bowels of the volcano.

The crystals contain concentric rings of differing chemical composition. Some orthopyroxene crystals, for instance, have a magnesium-rich core surrounded by an iron-rich rim; others have an iron-rich core and a magnesium-rich rim. Each type of crystal zonation can record the conditions of the magma reservoir from which it emerged.

"We chemically fingerprint each of those zones to determine how they formed," says lead study author Kate Saunders, a volcanologist of the University of Bristol in England. The outer rim of an orthopyroxene crystal, she says, represents the most recent stage of crystal formation and typically grew just months before the crystal?s emergence in volcanic ejecta. That allowed the researchers to make precise estimates of when, and how, the crystals acquired their chemical forms. "Mount Saint Helens is really good?because the samples, we know exactly when they erupted," Saunders says.

In several cases, a flurry of crystallization matched up well with internal activity at the volcano, as inferred from seismic records. For instance, crystals with iron-rich rims increased in number in the weeks and months leading up to the May 1980 eruption, as earthquakes shook the mountain with low-frequency seismic waves. Such long-period quakes, Saunders says, are characteristic of magma giving off gas. "Previously it's been reported that iron-rich rims on orthopyroxene are due to changes in the water content of the magma, so it makes sense that if we've got degassing or fluxion of water or CO2 through the system, we may get more iron-rich rims," she says. Other crystals with magnesium-rich rims seem to mark an influx of hot magma from deep reservoirs just before eruption.

Those events are also captured in the seismic record, but the root cause of the tremors is not always clear from seismology alone. That is where the crystals can provide important corroboration?or critical insight into ancient eruptions, for which seismic records do not exist. In the case of Mount Saint Helens, the study's authors "are providing fairly convincing arguments that the periods of enhanced seismicity are related to inputs of magma," says Timothy Druitt, a volcanologist at Blaise Pascal University in Clermont?Ferrand, France. "Just because you've got seismicity doesn't mean you've got magma intruding at depth," he adds. "They're providing evidence that that's probably what happened. If you can establish that, then that helps you better interpret your seismicity.?

It's not that I haven't known other options are out there for household finances, besides the single-financial-profile Hanna and I seem to be trending toward, but it's fascinating to me how many people (women particularly?) feel strongly?about maintaining their financial independence even within stable, long-term relationships.

Generally-speaking, there seems to be a lot of angst and anxiety these days about establishing household economies.?Which (me being me) makes me reflect on why I don't feel that level of angst and anxiety incorporating another person's financial expectations and spending habits into my life (and trusting another person with my own income). Was it weird, at first? A little. It's impossible to keep as tight a grip on the pulse of household spending when there are two of us -- unless either of us were willing to spend a lot more time tracking trends (we aren't). And I had to get used to Hanna making decisions with "my" money that I wouldn't necessarily make vis a vis?discretionary spending ... but then again, she's had to do the same. For the past three years, my paychecks have been automatically deposited into an account that Hanna has full access to, and that's never really bothered me.

So the question becomes: Why? Why don't I worry??

I think it has something to do with how material resources and respect for individual decision-making and personal property (the things?of our lives) were handled in my family of origin.

I grew up in a family where there was one main source of income: my father's salary. My mother had done wage-work before we were born, and has picked up work-for-hire since we grew up and moved on, but didn't work for pay while we were growing up. Yet regardless of the source of income, financial resources were consolidated: there was one checking account out of which bills were paid and daily expenses withdrawn. It had both my parents' names on it. Their financial assets were theirs?never "his" and "hers."

Us kids all got spending money when we were small, and were taken to the bank to open savings accounts once we were earning pocket money (and later more significant income). So as kids, we had money that was separate from the family economy. We were also, correspondingly, expected to take responsibility for our own discretionary spending as we were able.

And I think almost more important than the specific, technical, details concerning the flow of cash, is the fact that we had confidence in one another to be financially responsible. My parents have confidence in each other as financial decision-makers, and helped us kids gain a basic understanding of our own finances so that as we moved from familial inter-dependence into adult fiscal independence (contrary to mythology, a gradual and far-from-decisive process) we were able to communicate about economic needs and desires without moral judgment. Resources were finite, true, but decisions about how to work within those material realities was always pursued collaboratively

Perhaps because of this model, I felt little discomfort in pooling our financial resources.?

Neither Hanna nor I enjoy book-keeping. So it's way?easier to have a single account for joint spending (virtually all our spending now) than it is to keep track of who's paying what bills, buying what groceries, or who should be responsible for paying the tab for the rental car. Or, as I've seen some couples do, pay one another back via the monthly rent check or something similar.

OH MY GOD THAT WOULD DRIVE ME INSANE. Actually, it drove me a little bananas when we were?doing that, or trying to, for the first year and a half of our relationship. The endless "Who's turn is it to ..." and "How much do I owe ..." and "If I pay for, then you can get ..." At which point pooling finances seemed like a simple expedient to cut out all the white noise of negotiation and haggling.

Would I worry more about protecting my financial independence if I were in a heterosexual relationship? To some extent, perhaps. Like with marriage itself, I worry less about falling into heteronormative sand traps because our relationship is by definition already non-normative. I don't have the fear, for example, that my husband will just fall into handling the finances because social expectation and pressure encourages him to do so. In a relationship with two women, there is no "obvious" partner to coordinate the household economy. Rather than having social forces relentlessly pushing us toward integration, we have to move forward with deliberate insistence that, yes, this is what we wish to do. This is how we wish to live.

Which is not to suggest that hetero couples aren't making deliberate decisions. Just that the social pressure to fit heteronormative marriage ideals (male breadwinner, female home-maker) isn't applied so heavily when it comes to people who aren't in hetero relationships. To my mind, part of being in a marriage (or non-marital long-term relationship) is the luxury of not keeping financial score, as it were. Obviously you still keep your fingers on the pulse of basic fairness, in the sense that you speak up if it starts feeling like you always?end up stopping for groceries or your partner always?gets to pick the Friday-night movie. But?I felt very strongly, going into our relationship, that I wanted our household to be?ours?not "hers" and "hers" in a nit-picky material way.

The French president said that while Paris will withdraw its 2,000 combat troops ? out of a total of 3,400 troops plus 150 gendarmes ? by Dec. 31, it was not renouncing all support for Afghanistan. France so far has not pledged to help bankroll the Afghan security forces beyond 2014, but Hollande said some French forces would stay behind and help train Afghan soldiers and police.

?Is this an abandonment?? Hollande asked rhetorically during a function at the French Embassy in Kabul. ?No. This is a continuation, and will be a further engagement, but in a different form.?

France, which has lost more than 80 soldiers in the war, is the fifth largest contributor of troops after the United States, Britain, Germany and Italy.

The United States is pulling out 23,000 troops by the end of September, on top of the 10,000 it withdrew last year.

Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, said this week that on Sept. 30 there will be 68,000 American and about 40,000 other coalition forces in Afghanistan ? compared to more than 130,000 last year.

Many European countries face disillusionment and fatigue from the decade-long war and are wrestling with their own economic crises.

In an appeal to war-weary voters in a difficult re-election campaign, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy pledged to withdraw all French troops by the end of next year. Sarkozy announced the accelerated withdrawal after four French troops were killed by a rogue Afghan soldier in January.

Hollande, who defeated Sarkozy and took office this month, made this year?s pullout a pillar of his election campaign.

French military spokesman Col. Thierry Burkhard said the 2,000 troops leaving this year ?conduct operations? and that those who will remain include ?hundreds? of trainers, troops handling logistics for the pullout and others who help protect the French hospital, air bases and support staff. He added that defence officials were currently deciding how many would remain in each capacity.

French troops are deployed in the Surobi district of Kabul province, Kapisa province to the north of the capital and at Kandahar Air Field in the south where France has three fighter jets. Burkhard said most of the French troops will be withdrawn from Kapisa and Surobi. The French military equipment would leave Afghanistan along ground routes.

?You have carried out your mission,? Hollande told French soldiers stationed in Nijrab district of Kapisa. ?The terrorist threat that targeted our territory ? while it hasn?t totally disappeared ? is in part lessened.?

Hollande told Afghan President Hamid Karzai during a lunch meeting that trainers will continue to work with the Afghan security forces, but he did not say how long they would stay.

?Between now and the end of the year, the Afghan army will take control of the zones protected by our forces,? Hollande said. The transition will be carried out ?intelligently and with complete and friendly co-operation with the Afghan authorities.?

The Afghan army and police have started taking charge of security in areas that are home to 75 per cent of the population. The goal is for Afghan forces to be in the lead across the country by mid-2013. NATO and other foreign forces would then assume a support role for the 352,000-strong Afghan security forces until the end of 2014.

Ashraf Ghani, head of a commission overseeing the transition, said earlier this month that ?the risks in Kapisa are containable and within our capability.?

Mohammad Hussain Khan Sanjani, chief of provincial council in Kapisa, said the French troops were active in reconstruction, worked with the Afghan army and police and conducted patrols in Alasay and Tagab districts, the two most restive areas of the province.

?Let?s wait and see,? Sanjani said about the effect of the French exit. ?I hope the French government will continue to pay attention to training and equipping the Afghan police and army. If they do not help us, our forces will face difficulties.?

Bump, a photo-sharing app and longtime Apple?App Store all-star, just took its flavor of seamless swapping to the next level. The app, which has been around since the mobile dark ages of 2009, was originally conceived as a way to trade contact information with a literal "bump." In February, its creators launched Bump 3.0, a pared-down twist on the classic app that highlights the services its users were using most, namely the ability to swap pictures by tapping their phones together. Now, Bump has expanded a step further toward seamless sharing, and today the app adds the ability to "bump" photos from your smartphone straight to your computer.

We spoke with Bump co-founder and CEO Dave Lieb about the app's clever (and eminently useful) new direction.?

"We want to solve real problems that people have," Lieb said. And sharing photos between all of our devices should be simpler. Syncing services can be a disaster when it comes to cross-platform compatibility, but Bump forgoes the awkward process of getting your gadgets to play nice, since it only requires the app and a browser. "There really should be no limits. We want to make it so you never email yourself a photo again."

In Bump 3.0, available now both both Android and iOS, you can select the photos you'd like to share (or save) by tapping. If you're familiar with Bump, the next part won't seem too unusual, but if you aren't, then you're in for something of a technological treat. When you've got the photos you want to beam elsewhere selected on your smartphone, you'll point your computer's Web browser to?bu.mp.com?and literally tap your phone against your computer's spacebar.?

We're still pretty convinced this process operates via magic (the creators seem to acknowledge this, since you get a message reading "These?photos were magically transferred using Bump" once you're done). But rather than using NFC technology?(which requires a special chip)?like MasterCard and Google are pioneering, Bump weaves together an array of geo and sensor data from your devices in order to pin down which two are trying to get cozy.?

The result is a truly effortless sharing experience that's among the most elegantly designed apps we've ever seen. Our only stumbling block in sharing to our computer, or between our HTC One X and an iPhone 4S, was that we weren't actually bumping the phone against the spacebar (or the unsuspecting other phone) hard enough, so don't be shy about that.?

?The vibration that arises out of the minor gadget collision activates the phone's built-in accelerometer, which then triggers the app's servers to pair your devices. Once you've got your photos bumped over to your computer, you can then download them locally, generate a Web link for them, or share them to Facebook, though they just appear as truncated links rather than full Instagram-esque images.
