Cheating No Longer the Top Reason for British Divorce ? The Blogs ...

by Cristen Conger |

Divorce lawyers at the firm Grant Thornton reported a new trend in couples severing nuptial ties: affairs aren?t the biggest factor pushing people apart. And, no, it?s not the economy, stupid, although tighter budgets might put a strain on the heartstrings.

According to this year?s Grant Thornton divorce survey, 27 percent of couples decided to split up due to ?growing apart.? Coming in at a close second, 25 percent cited cheating. Counselor Christie Northam explained to The Guardian, ?While in the past an affair would have been the signal that all was not right in a relationship, now that is not necessarily the case. People are not necessarily having those affairs before they decide the spark has gone out of their relationship.?

So instead of weathering affairs, people may exit their relationships sooner. Or perhaps cheating isn?t the dealbreaker it used to be ? although I doubt it. As the economic recovery continues, divorce rates will be interesting to watch either way. Since they fell during the recession I wonder whether they?ll rebound with the stock market.

Health and Fitness ? Accelerated Aging With HIV ? Health and Fitness

In the 1980?s, growing old with HIV seemed like a fairytale, and the immediate goal of all HIV/AIDS research was to extend the lives of patients. However, with today?s antiretrovirals and other treatments, over half the HIV-infected population in the United States is over forty years old. It?s good news that those with this condition are living longer. However, the quality of life lived is compromised by the effects of HIV/AIDS. It is becoming apparent that accelerated aging with HIV can, in effect, add over ten years to the actual age of the patient. In 2010, this subject was address by multiple experts in RITA, a publication of The Center for AIDS Information and Advocacy. It appears that there is a stair-step effect from physical problems to emotional and cognitive problems.

Individuals infected with HIV have a higher risk for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, broken bones, and other illnesses. This physical health risk can prevent what seems like a lifelong obstacle course laid out before patients who are dealing with physical issues that should be a decade or more away. With one challenge arising after another, discouragement, depression, and anxiety can diminish hardiness. Hardiness is basically the perception that difficulties are challenges to be fought rather than overwhelming obstacles which stop you in your tracks. Accelerated aging with HIV moves from physical to emotional and cognitive with the decline of hardiness.

Emotional and cognitive aging are entwined in the accelerated aging with HIV. Patients may find themselves forgetting things often or having to think through the steps to complete a task over again. One possible reason for this is a lack of healthy sleep patterns. Healthy sleep amounts and routines promote cognitive processing. Depression and anxiety, as well as sickness, undermine the ability to sleep, exacerbating cognitive problems. Fatigue, lack of social and/or cognitive stimulation can also contribute to the neurocognitive aging effect of HIV.

However, each person?s progress must be measured individually because a 50-year-old who has the heart of a 65-year-old is not necessarily infected with HIV. Other factors, such as smoking, drinking alcohol, using recreational drugs, excessive weight, a sedentary lifestyle, and genetics also play a large part in aging both physically and mentally. These factors will also have an effect on the accelerated aging with HIV that infected patients experience. Experts recommend improve the overall lifestyle health, social interaction, and cognitive stimulation to combat the aging effects while scientists search for new ways to find a complete cure for HIV/AIDS.

International Symposium on HIV & Emerging Infectious Diseases (ISHEID): the world leading AIDS experts will gather for the 2012 HIV AIDS ISHEID conference in Marseille, France, May 23-25, 2012. The general AIDS conference theme will be ?From Universal HIV Testing to HIV Cure?.

German Cow on the Lam (ContributorNetwork)

Waiting till the cows come home has taken on literal meaning in Germany - except, it's just one heifer that has the nation on the lookout.

In May, a bovine named Yvonne escaped from a farm in Bavaria, and she's been winning a game of hide-and-seek ever since, according to the Associated Press.

The brown dairy cow has become a bit of an enigma; locals have reported sightings, searchers unsuccessfully used food to tempt her into the open, and even a thermal camera attached to a helicopter turned up no results.

Even so, it wasn't until cops almost ran over the bovine that she earned her 15 minutes of fame. The run-in made the cops label the animal a public hazard and ordered anyone who spotted her to shoot immediately.

Animal rights activists jumped to Yvonne's defense, and as of last Friday some 23,000 people had liked a Facebook page calling for her safety.

The shooting order has since been revoked, and an animal sanctuary bought the cow from her original owners and is leading the rescue effort.

That's not the only odd German animal news lately.

In Austria earlier this month, a German couple found themselves at the mercy of a Billy goat who wouldn't quit attacking them, according to the Associated Press.

The animal clearly wasn't kidding around: It butted Stefan Prill and his wife, Anja Buder, for more than three hours before Prill grabbed it by the horns to stay safe and headed down the mountain toward the Austrian town of Ausservillgraten.

There were no major injuries once the goat tuckered himself out, though the animal's owner agreed to pay for the torn trousers.

Perhaps that Billy goat would have calmed down had he met up with an 84-year-old Brandenburg woman accused of feeding her rabbit pot.

The woman said that the marijuana grew naturally outside of her home, and the rabbits started eating it all on their own. The plants grew back so quickly that the woman deemed them excellent food, according to The Local.

Brandenburg officials said her explanation sounded reasonable, but they cut down the plants nonetheless.

New iPhone app offers rewards for exercising (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Need some motivation to hit the gym? Perhaps some free merchandise will do the trick.

At least this is the premise that Nexercise is built upon, a free iPhone app that tracks activities ranging from running and weightlifting to fencing and polo and rewards users with free and discounted merchandise in the hopes that users will adopt long-term exercise habits.

"We're trying to create a lifestyle - not a quick fix," said co-founder Benjamin Young. "We don't focus on how many miles you ran or how many pounds you've lifted. You get points in the game for healthy behaviors."

Users can accumulate points based on the length of their workouts and for other behaviors that reinforce frequent exercise habits. Exercising with a friend or on a rainy day, for instance, allows users to accumulate bonus points.

"A lot of it is driven by research studies. If you exercise with someone, you're more likely to continue to exercise." said Young.

Receiving prizes is more of a lottery rather than direct redemption. Users with more points have greater chances of winning prizes, and those that have reached higher levels have access to more valuable prizes.

According to Young, the chances of winning a prize at the lowest level are about 25 percent, with prizes ranging from $5 gift cards and coupons for items such as energy bars, up to $250 gift cards.

Recent integration earlier this month with Kiip, a San Francisco-based advertising startup, provides access to prizes from retailers such as makeup company Sephora and vitamin and supplements maker GNC among many others.

Having recently completed an experimental run at the University of Maryland, the app is still quite new and has some kinks.

It has been criticized for the quality of its rewards, which Young said have improved with its recent integration with Kiip, and will continually improve as the app matures.

"It's a function of growth. We're growing and the more we grow, the more likely we'll have bigger vendors getting on board," he explained.

Another common complaint is that the app can't run in the background, which means the app has to be open at all times in order to fully track physical activity. Young said the problem is scheduled to be fixed in the fall.

Other upcoming plans for the app include a contextual notification system to increase engagement. For instance, if the app detects that a user is motivated by competition, it will notify them when their friends have surpassed them in the game.

A website, called Earndit, has partnered with some of the same prize providers. Other popular fitness apps include Runkeeper and Nike+, which count calories and map trails, but do not provide prizes as incentives.

Nexercise is available worldwide on the App Store.

(AP) ? Vandals desecrated a monument marking the spot in Poland where hundreds of Jews were burned alive during World War II, scrawling "they were flammable" and a swastika on the memorial.

The government, Poland's Jewish community and Holocaust survivors on Thursday all strongly condemned the attack on the site, one of the most notorious cases in which local people collaborated with the Nazis in killing Jews during the German wartime occupation of much of Eastern Europe.

The monument in the town of Jedwabne (yed-VAHB-neh) honors the victims of July 10, 1941, when about 40 Poles hunted down the town's Jews, shut them up in a barn and set it alight, killing between 300 and 400 people.

The vandals this week used green paint to spray the symbols of a swastika and "SS" ? the name of an elite Nazi force ? on the monument, as well as the phrases "I don't apologize for Jedwabne" and "they were flammable."

"I utterly condemn these acts of criminality, alien to Polish tradition," Poland's Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski said in a statement. "There is no room for such behavior in Polish society ? even if it is the work of but a small group of extremists."

Sikorski expressed solidarity with anyone affected by the act, and said he was convinced the perpetrators would be tracked down soon and face justice.

Police discovered the desecration Wednesday during a patrol and are trying to find the culprits.

The head of Poland's Jewish community, Piotr Kadlcik, called on authorities to crack down harder on anti-Semitic incidents, saying the desecration at Jedwabne comes after authorities have treated such cases with leniency for years.

The massacre came to light only a decade ago with the 2000 book "Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne, Poland," by sociologist Jan Tomasz Gross, which sparked controversy and soul-searching in Poland.

The book led to a government investigation that confirmed that Poles ? and not Nazi Germans ? were to blame for the killings. Poland's then-president Aleksander Kwasniewski apologized for his country's sins, but some Poles today remain in denial that such horrors were committed by their own people.

Meanwhile, Polish officials on Thursday were commemorating the anniversary of the German attack on Poland on Sept. 1, 1939, which marked the start of World War II.

Poland's Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich recalled that the swastika, the Nazi symbol, was both anti-Polish and anti-Semitic. He said the incident at Jedwabne does not reflect the sentiment of the country, but called on Poles to speak out strongly against such acts of hatred and anti-Semitism.

The American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants said in a statement they were "horrified" by the desecration.
