BMW Withdraws Hybrid | Automotive Discovery

Dave Buchko, a BMW insider, recently announced that the automaker?s ActiveHybrid X6 ?will not be continued into the 2012 model year here in the U.S.? This comes less than two years after the debut of the X6. The ActiveHybrid X6 was first launched in 2009 and praised as the most powerful hybrid on the market.

The reason for the vehicle?s banishment is obvious. The ActiveHybrid X6 starts at $89,775, making the hybrid vehicle impractical even though it was designed to appeal to the green performance market. The X6 is powered by a 4.4-liter V-8 which is combined with electric motors for a healthy 480 horsepower. The ActiveHybrid is capable of 0 to 60 times of 5.4 seconds, according to BMW. The automaker originally estimated a mpg of 28 highway, but in real life the hybrid only rated 19 mpg highway; the diesel version got better fuel efficiency, by at the cost of power. In addition, the X6 was also slower, heavier, and less fuel efficient than the X6 xDrive50i. To make matters even worse, the Active Hybrid X6 is more expensive by almost $20,000.

The X6 xDrive 50i has 400 horsepower and is capable of zero to sixty mpg in 5.2 seconds. The vehicle gets 20 mpg on the highway, too. It stands to reason that most people who can afford a $70,000 vehicle could probably kick in an additional $20,000, which puts the two vehicles in direct competition for the same green market. Since the more affordable vehicle is also faster, lighter and more efficient, BMW?s decision was probably inevitable.

For that matter, consumers have probably noticed that the X6 M, referred to as ?insanely fast?, costs only $600 more than the ActiveHybrid; but the X6 M is 0.9 seconds faster 0 to 60 mph, weighs approximately 500 pounds less, and gets a highway rating that is roughly equivalent to the Active Hybrid?s rating.

Buchko didn?t comment on the possibility that the X6 could eventually have alternate means of power. The BimmerFile, a site for BMW enthusiasts, predicts that the 2012 S Series will add an optional six-cylinder hybrid.

Authorities trying to close in on Calif. fugitive (AP)

FORT BRAGG, Calif. ? Authorities said Friday they were closing in on a murder suspect who shot at officers during the largest local manhunt in these northern California redwoods in decades.

About 50 officers and two bloodhounds were scouring the forests near Fort Bragg, a day after Aaron Bassler fired shots at Alameda County deputies, said Kurt Smallcomb, a captain with Mendocino County sheriff's office.

No deputies were hit by the gunfire. They returned fire with about 10 shots.

Bassler has been at large for more than a month in Northern California.

"We were real close and lucky at the same time that nobody got injured," Smallcomb said.

Bassler, 35, is suspected of killing a Fort Bragg city councilman on Aug. 27 and one other person several weeks earlier.

Bassler is thought to be hiding in the redwoods outside of Fort Bragg and is believed to have broken into several cabins to steal food and at least two other weapons, authorities said.

"He is totally prepared to tactically engage us," Smallcomb said. "He has proven this in the last two shooting incidents."

Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman said he did not know how many shots Bassler was suspected of firing, or whether he had been wounded in Thursday's exchange. The search team, which includes U.S. Marshals, was bolstered Friday with sheriff's deputies from Sacramento and Lake counties.

They feel certain they're closing in.

"I'm looking at the glass is almost full, instead of half full," Smallcomb said.

He added that Bassler has a huge edge with his knowledge of the area.

"He's known this area for 30 years, we've only known it for 34 days," Smallcomb said. "He has the advantage as far as the landscape now."

Wanted posters are in the windows of most shops in this fishing and lumber town three hours north of San Francisco. A half dozen armed agents rode shotgun Friday on the region's biggest tourist attraction, the fabled Skunk Train that has been traversing the redwood route from Fort Bragg to Willits since 1885. An AP photographer saw at least three get off in Northspur, near the command center deep in the redwoods.

Officials asked Fort Bragg residents and others to stay out of the forest until Bassler is captured.

"Why haven't they caught him yet?" said Matt Lunsford, 29, who was hanging out with friends in front of the popular Headlands Coffeehouse in the historic downtown that dates back to the 1800s. "He's like some Rambo ? he's out there defying the man."

Fort Bragg Councilman Jere Melo, who also worked as a security contractor, and a co-worker at a private timber company confronted Bassler while investigating reports of an illegal marijuana farm outside of town.

Police said Bassler was cultivating some 400 poppy plants and was holed up in a makeshift bunker when he fired on the 69-year-old Melo and a co-worker who escaped and called for help.

Bassler is also being sought in the fatal shooting of Matthew Coleman of the Mendocino County Land Trust. The former Fish and Game Department employee was found dead next to his car on Aug. 11 up the coast from Fort Bragg.

Both men were highly respected for their love of the land and their community work. The 7,000 residents of Fort Bragg have been on edge while the manhunt has enveloped their coastal fishing and lumber community.

"We all have our shoulders in our ears, we're so spooked," said Chriss Zaida, owner of Toto Zaida, a clothing store across from the coffee shop. She said there has been a lot of talk of vigilantism, but that most people believe the authorities are doing the best they can, given Bassler's apparent marksmanship.

"I've heard a lot of people say he deserves to die," she said, shaking her head. "I think he needs to be brought to justice ? and I hope it happens quickly."

Earlier this week, authorities released a photo they said was Bassler vandalizing a vacation cabin while holding a high-caliber rifle. On Wednesday, they confirmed his fingerprints linked him to another burglary at a cabin.

The suspect's father, James Bassler, said he had tried for years to get county authorities put his son into a mental health program, but that his letters and calls had gone unanswered due to privacy laws that protect his son.

Smallcomb and Allman hope to capture Bassler alive.

"If this ended without another shot being fired," Allman said, "we'd all be satisfied."

A major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and other health- and life-threatening conditions, obesity is epidemic in the United States and other developed nations where it?s fueled in large part by excessive consumption of a fat-rich ?Western diet.?

But not all fats are equal. Animal-derived saturated fats like lard and butter are strongly linked to adverse health effects, but unsaturated and polyunsaturated fats from plants and cold-water fish like salmon and mackerel are not. In fact, the latter are known to produce beneficial health effects and can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

For biomedical investigators, the enduring question has been why saturated and unsaturated fatty acids produce such diametrically opposed health effects. Now, in a paper published in the September 30 issue of the journal Cell, researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and colleagues offer an explanation, and a framework that could lead to dietary supplements designed to treat obesity at the molecular level.

?These findings not only explain the long-standing enigma regarding the differential health effects of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids,? said senior author Michael Karin, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology in UC San Diego?s Laboratory of Gene Regulation and Signal Transduction, ?they also provide improved tools and a mechanistic framework for the potential development of dietary supplements to treat obesity, estimated to be worth billions of dollars per year.?

Senior author Karin, first author Ryan G. Holzer, PhD, formerly a graduate student in Karin?s lab and now at the Mayo Clinic, and colleagues began with the observation that saturated fatty acids, such as palmitic acid, are potent activators of Jun kinases (JNK), key regulatory molecules implicated in the development of type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity and atherosclerosis. However, unsaturated fatty acids such as palmitoleic acid (POA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) not only do not activate JNK, but actually block JNK activation by palmitic acid.

Palmitic acid and POA differ in molecular structure by the presence of a single unsaturated bond (the absence of two hydrogen atoms) in POA. Cellular membrane fluidity is decreased upon incorporation of saturated fatty acids, which possess rigid hydrocarbon tails, but increased by the incorporation of unsaturated fatty acids with ?bent? hydrocarbon tails.

Postulating that the membrane is the only cellular structure that can discriminate between all of these fatty acids, the scientists searched for membrane-associated protein kinases that could account for the differential effects on JNK activity. They ultimately identified c-Src, a membrane-associated tyrosine kinase, as the molecule responsible for activation of JNK by palmitic acid and other saturated fatty acids. They also discovered that saturated fatty acids ?push? c-Src into membrane sub-domains of reduced fluidity and increased rigidity, where it accumulates in an activated form that eventually leads to JNK activation.

By contrast, POA and EPA prevent these changes in the membrane distribution of c-Src and ? by blocking c-Src aggregation ? they inhibit its activation by saturated fatty acids.

Most of the research was conducted using cultured cells (fibroblasts) treated with individual or combined fatty acids, but the scientists also fed mice a high-fat diet (in which 60 percent of the calories were fat-derived) and reported similar c-Src accumulation within membrane subdomains of increased rigidity and JNK activation.

Currently, polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as EPA and structurally-related omega-3 fatty acids are used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia (high blood cholesterol levels) and may be effective in the treatment or prevention of type 2 diabetes. Karin said understanding how EPA works could lead to the identification of even more potent EPA-like molecules.

As quarterbacks like Jay Cutler continue to get pummeled by defenders, Michael Ventre thinks there will be even more rules protecting them.

They are colorful creatures, and come in many types, with slight variations in size and shape. You can spot them without binoculars, but don?t get too close. They attract predators, and trust me, you don?t want to get in the middle of that.

This particular endangered species is known as the NFL quarterback, and if something isn?t done fairly soon they?re likely to become extinct.

With signal-callers being harmed and wounded at an alarming rate, you have to wonder just where this is headed. In 10 years, will we even have quarterbacks, or will the game revert to 100 percent Wildcat? Will they wear red vests in games to indicate ?Hands Off!? Or will they be handed cans of pepper spray to defend themselves? Maybe they?ll be replaced by robots?

One thing is certain: Change is inevitable. The game just won?t be the same years from now. In some ways, it will be barely recognizable. Get used to it.

It has happened already, and certainly it will continue. Now when a defensive end rushes a quarterback, he practically has to point to the prey, turn to the official and say, ?Is it OK if I hit him here? What about here? Is this too hard? As far as falling to the ground, should I look for a deeper patch of grass??

Defensive players seem to be getting fined at a faster rate, and lashing out later about the unfairness of it all. Quarterbacks like Michael Vick and Tony Romo make national news each day over whether they can play on Sunday. Jay Cutler, operating behind a rickety offensive line in Chicago, is unfortunately a thick medical chart waiting to happen. Kerry Collins has concussive symptoms in Indianapolis.

This weekend, who knows? Spin the QB roulette wheel.

The NFL is the biggest of big-money games. The insanely high ratings just keep climbing, and that translates into more dough, and consequently more in the bank accounts of the most valuable individuals on the field, the quarterbacks. Such investments need to be protected.

Each year there surely will be added protections given to quarterbacks ? yes, even more than are already in place, if you can wrap your noodle around that ? and more handcuffs put on defensive players. Even with the present restrictions, which cause pass-rushers to chafe, quarterbacks are still getting smacked around like Victor Ortiz after a head-butt apology.

Professional football players overall are getting bigger, stronger and faster. It?s the evolution of the occupation. Yet that isn?t the only factor in the endangerment of quarterbacks.

In the past, a defense might have one or two superior athletes like that. Now defensive squads are deeper. Football is more popular than ever, more and more universities are producing improved players, and as a result there are usually 11 outstanding physical specimens on the defensive side of the ball.

That trend will only continue.

And when it becomes obvious that the dynamic continues to shift to the defense, that offensive linemen ? no matter how much they evolve, the defense always has the advantage because pass rushers are the initiators and blockers are the reactors ? aren?t getting the job done protecting quarterbacks, then more draconian measures will be implemented.

Life of TOI: Baby Shower and Registry

I just came back from Mrs Pancakes loving and exciting virtual baby shower. Being surrounded by lovely and kind people it reminded me of what happened last week.

So, last week hubby comes home and says:

1. ?16th October my boss?s wife and another colleague want to throw us a joint baby shower.?

2. ?They asked me if we have a baby gift registry.?

I was so touched by the thought of them hosting a baby shower for us. That?s so kind of them, it makes me all speechless and teary for happiness. I never thought we were going to have a baby shower because our family is all over the world part this little town of Canada, but here we are, going to have a baby shower. We are happy to be surrounded by such wonderful thoughtful and kind people. We feel truly blessed!

Then the question of baby registry sent us into a complete panic state. To do baby registry or not to baby registry?

We never thought about baby registry. Now that they?ve been asked if we have one, we don?t know what to do. Hubby doesn?t like the idea of baby registry because he doesn?t want people to feel like they HAVE to buy us something. We were not expecting this kindness and whatever people feel like giving us will be more than welcome.
